Deaths of 37 detained miners trigger protests in Minna, Nigeria

Thirty-seven people detained on suspicion of illegal mining died in custody in Nigeria's Niger State, prompting protests in the state capital, Minna. The federal government suspended the state civil-defence commandant and announced a full investigation.

Why it matters

The case raises questions about mass deaths in custody, official accountability and the policing of protests. Officials initially cited a possible disease outbreak, while survivors described overcrowding and poor ventilation; the cause of death has not been established.

Satellite analysis says China upgraded Djibouti base, potentially widening regional monitoring

A commercial satellite-imagery analysis published by the Center for Strategic and International Studies on September 17 identifies two new communications facilities at China's military base in Djibouti. Researchers assess that the equipment could strengthen long-range command, satellite links and monitoring of nearby military activity.

The base sits near a crucial Red Sea–Gulf of Aden shipping route and close to US, Japanese and European military facilities. The monitoring capability is an independent assessment from public imagery, not an official Chinese confirmation, and the imagery does not prove that communications are being intercepted.

Congo reports 7,258 Ebola cases as WHO says no turning point yet

DR Congo government figures released on September 15 show 7,258 confirmed Bundibugyo Ebola cases and 3,510 deaths across seven provinces. Daily cases have fallen from about 120 to about 80, but UN and WHO officials say the epidemic remains extensive and is not yet under control.

Residents and travellers in affected areas should follow national health authorities and WHO advice, avoid contact with patient body fluids and seek care early. Slower case growth does not mean the outbreak is over.

Death toll in Nigeria suspected methanol-drink poisoning rises to 49; about 170 affected

Ondo State's health commissioner says 49 people have died and about 170 were affected after consuming a locally made drink suspected to be poisonous. An earlier Associated Press report put the toll at 48 with about 100 receiving treatment. Police have arrested 15 people while the product and distribution chain remain under investigation.

Methanol poisoning can rapidly cause blindness, brain damage, kidney failure and death. The affected products, batches and full supply chain have not yet been identified, so residents should follow formal health and police alerts.
