Reuters: U.S. and China discuss LNG tariff cuts; no final deal

Reuters reported on September 18, citing two people briefed on the talks, that the United States and China are discussing reducing or eliminating China's 15% tariff on U.S. liquefied natural gas. Neither government has formally confirmed an LNG arrangement.

Why it matters

China confirms Xi's September 23–25 U.S. state visit as Washington proposes AI incident alerts

China's Foreign Ministry confirmed on September 21 that President Xi Jinping will make a state visit to the United States from September 23 to 25 at President Donald Trump's invitation. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent separately said Washington proposed a notification mechanism for AI incidents that could affect national security; China has not announced acceptance of that proposal.

The officially confirmed itinerary is a substantive diplomatic development. The AI mechanism remains a U.S. proposal, however, while the scope of any tariff reductions and other negotiated outcomes is still unsettled.
