Materials placed on Dutch tracks trigger suspected-sabotage probe

ProRail said rail faults began appearing across central, northern and eastern Netherlands at about 5:30 a.m. on September 15. Crews then found materials deliberately placed on or near tracks and related equipment at 24 locations, causing widespread delays and cancellations.

Routes around Zwolle, Deventer, Amersfoort, Utrecht, Gouda and Apeldoorn were among those affected. Some level crossings also stopped operating normally, disrupting road as well as rail travel during the morning rush. Restoration estimates can change as items are removed and safety checks are completed.

ProRail reported the incidents to police and is helping preserve evidence. Investigators are examining whether the acts amount to coordinated sabotage. No suspect, motive or claim of responsibility has been announced, and there is no verified basis to blame a state or organization.
