Update: Saudi coalition says Houthi ballistic missile toward Riyadh intercepted; airport-area fire cause unknown

Reuters video and photographs published on September 19 showed a huge pillar of black smoke near Riyadh's main airport, with the airport highway, main terminal building and other facilities in the foreground. Flames were briefly visible behind what appeared to be fuel tanks. The imagery confirms a fire nearby but cannot by itself identify the burning material, damaged site or cause.

Saudi Civil Defence had sent phone alerts in Riyadh and Al-Kharj, east of the capital, warning of potential danger from aerial attacks. A Reuters journalist heard booms in Riyadh's Olaya district before Civil Defence issued an all-clear on Saturday morning. AP had earlier reported that Riyadh's alert referred to a hostile aerial threat.

The Saudi-led coalition later said air defences destroyed a Houthi ballistic missile fired toward Riyadh and that attacks on civilian infrastructure in Yanbu, Taif, Baysh and Farasan were also thwarted. Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree separately claimed the group used cruise and ballistic missiles and drones against Riyadh and Yanbu; AP said it could not independently verify the claimed effects.

AP and Reuters reported no casualties or damage, and Saudi Aramco did not respond to the Houthi claim of fires at its Yanbu facilities. The cause of the smoke and flames near the airport remains undisclosed, so this report does not directly link that fire to the intercepted missile.
